COLD!!

Spring is here but someone forgot to turn off the cold air! This week the temps went into the freezing point and we even had a few days of frost. This isn't a huge deal except when you have a garden full of veggies tying to grow. Frost on vegetable plants is not a good thing, it will kill them! So with the freeze coming we had to do something! Troye was at work so the boys and I gathered all the sheets and items we could find to cover the plants. It was hard work but we got it done! The next morning there was a heavy frost so I was so glad that we covered them. I uncovered them so they could get the warm sun during the day. Troye was off for the day so we worked on creating a better barrier for the plants. It worked great too! We had two more days of freezing temps and frost. Today we took all of the covers off the plants and it seems that most of the plants survived! Yea!! I sure hope we are done with the cold weather!

Bring on the rain

We have our first rain barrel up and ready to catch some rain!  We are suppose to get some rain this weekend (but we were suppose to last weekend and didn't).  Right now we have the gutter on the backside of the greenhouse.  We  hope to install one on the front as well.  Our goal is to have this barrel able to water the raised beds inside the greenhouse.  This would free us up from using so much of our water.  Our water here is not cheap so anything we can do to help we will do it!  I will be doing a rain dance just so I can see it all work!  Ha!

Growing garden!

We have lots planted already! I have to admit that every morning feels like Christmas as I walk to the greenhouse! I can't wait to see what new plant is emerging! LOL! We have lots of seedlings planted in the greenhouse and they are doing awesome! I have been making planting pots from newspapers! it is super easy and cost hardly anything! We have also planted some things outside but they are slow growing, and I am sure that has to do with the cold spells we are getting! If everything grows and produces we will have lots of veggies! We are trying different things as far as growing veggies. I am trying a potato patch were the potatoes just grow in hay! I have no idea if It will work but I read about it so why not try! We also read about planting beans and corn together. The corn acts as a trellis for the beans. This is an old Indian custom. Again, why not give it try! Here are some pictures! I will continue to update as everything grows! Oh and we installed a water spigot by the garden so watering is much easier! Yea!

Green house update!

Well we have been working hard to complete the greenhouse! It was 85% complete, just needed the front wall installed when we were able to teach the boys a lesson on air resistance! The greenhouse basically had 3 walls completed with the one wall just framed in when a huge storm rolled in! The greenhouse weathered the rain fine but the following day we had wind gust up to 40 mph! The greenhouse could not withstand that amount of wind when it was not closed in. The wind went I and had no where to go but up! So the main frame was lifted and several poles broke, leaving a mess! It was so frustrating! We were so close! But we used it as a lesson for the boys on both wind and procrastination! We had one day we could have finished it but we decided to wait until the weekend! Ugh! Lesson learned! Anyway we made sense of he mess and went and bought the needed supplies and rebuilt! We still have some work to do but this time it is structurally ok. The first day after it was up it was HOT inside! The plants will like it!

Awesome weather and day!

We finally have some nice weather! The rain is gone and the sun is shining! Today we worked on the greenhouse. We were able to get the plastic over the roof supports and down one wall! It is so exciting to see the progress!
While we worked colt and Camaron played and helped out when necessary. Camaron discovered a tree that was growing downward so he climbed up! He was so proud and then he realized he was stuck! Ha! But we helped him down and all was good! Troye taught Colt how to drive the mule! He was so excited! He was very careful and did a great job!
After we worked most of the day we took the boys to the Sam Houston museum at Sam Houston State University. We enjoyed looking at the buildings and walking around the pond! After the museum we finished off the day at 3spoons enjoying some frozen yogurt!
It as an awesome day with lots of fun and lots accomplished!
